The number of new coronavirus infections recorded in one day has increased significantly in the United States. Authorities reported 194,608 new cases yesterday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore. A week earlier, the number was 118,797. The number of deaths reported within a day with a confirmed CoV infection also rose week-over-week, from 532 to 891.
The previous highs were recorded on January 2, with 300,462 new infections, and on January 12, with 4,460 deaths. The vast majority of the recorded infections in the country are due to the particularly contagious delta variant, according to estimates by the public health agency CDC. This is as contagious as damp leaf, according to CDC estimates. So far, 57.2 percent of people in the U.S. have received at least an initial vaccination against the coronavirus, and 49.4 percent are fully vaccinated, according to CDC data.
